Mayer Hawthorne steals hearts with his “Gangsta Luv”

Some people go a whole lifetime without finding their soul mate. They sit around and dream that their true love will come to them and knock on their door; but alas, they never come knocking. I thought I would be yet another hopelessly waiting statistic until last weekend. I found him. My soul mate that is. He’s tall, well-dressed, talented, and got more white-boy soul than anyone on the East Coast. Only problem: he doesn’t know I exist, but in due time, that will all change. I had the pleasure of seeing my future lover, Mayer Hawthorne, perform last weekend at The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia with his band, The County, and together, they started the night’s party. After Jay Electronica left everyone feeling confused and bored, Mayer Hawthorne and the County came on-stage to a hard and apathetic crowd. But with their boisterous and fun stage-presence, huge smiles, and tailored-suits, the band won everyone over within seconds. They performed all of Mayer’s classics (“Maybe So, Maybe No” was easily my favorite), even the cover of “Gangsta Luv” as well as an incredible rendition of “Mr. Blue Sky.” Mayer truly knows how to work a crowd. His personality was charming, his voice was perfect, his moves were smooth, and by the set’s end, he had everyone, including the bros, dancing. Oh and Mayer, call me.
